Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board - PMETB
PMETB is the independent statutory body, responsible for overseeing
and promoting the development of postgraduate medical education and
training for all specialties, including general practice, across the
UK.
PMETB assumed its statutory powers on 30 September 2005 taking over
the responsibilities of the Specialist Training Authority of the
Medical Royal Colleges and the Joint Committee on Postgraduate
Training for General Practice.
PMETB's responsibilities include
establishing and raising standards
and quality in postgraduate medical education and training
providing arrangements to ensure
this quality is maintained
improving supervision of training
providing managed structures and
processes to ensure all interests are represented in postgraduate
medical education and
regulating specialist and general
training
Their specific responsibilities include
the approval of postgraduate medical
education and training programmes and courses
accreditation of postgraduate
education, and training institutions and trainers,
quality assurance of the
postgraduate medical education and training system,
ensuring that assessments and
examinations undertaken as part of training are reliable and fair,
issuing certificates to doctors
meeting the standards it sets for successful completion of
training and
assessing the equivalence of the
qualifications, training and experience of doctors seeking a
statement of eligibility to apply for entry to the Specialist or
General Practice Registers of the General Medical Council.
In achieving the above, PMETB will aim to:
Promote, maintain and continuously
improve the standards of postgraduate medical education, training,
assessment and accreditation to secure appropriate educational
outcomes
Fulfil the statutory competent
functions fairly, effectively and efficiently provide a responsive
and timely service for all trainees, trainers and others concerned
with training
Create a new system that is more
flexible and responsive to changing circumstances, the
requirements of users and providers of health services
Deal with the perception that the
current system is unfair and fails to properly recognise the
equivalence of qualifications, training and experience for
overseas doctors
Ensure that trainees are equipped
with the attitude and skills to continue learning throughout their
careers
Ensure that the health and well
being of individuals needing or using the services of GPs/
specialists are safeguarded
