Module One – Introduction to the Programme & Learning Styles

  • Understand the programme – context/structure and role of Action Learning Sets

  • Describe the theory of adult learning and the importance of reflective practice

  • Appreciate personal learning style and how to facilitate the learning of others in multi-professional teams to create a learning environment

Module Two – How Understanding Personality Types can Improve Communication

  • To learn about your personality type using Myers-Briggs

  • To understand your own preference and the preference of others to explore new ways of behaving

  • To recognise and value "normal" personality differences, including diversity and equality

  • To gain insight into how we communicate in a team

  • To apply MBTI preference to improve communication with patients and colleagues

Module Three – Career Management

  • Understand your own motivation and career drivers

  • List the domains of Good Medical Practice and examples of suitable types of evidence for each domain of your portfolio

  • Prepare for an effective appraisal interview that fulfils both educational and GMC revalidation requirements

  • Consider your strengths and achievements to help with completing an application form and preparing
    for the job interview

  • Appreciate the importance of self-health and understand your responsibility about your own health and
    those of colleagues and where to go for support and advice

Module Four – Patient Safety, Governance and Risk Management

  • Appreciate how to reduce errors and complaints through clear giving, receiving and recording of information and the importance of being open and honest

  • Understand the terms and the importance of clinical governance and the CNST

  • Understand the importance of patient confidentiality and the role of the Caldicott guardian

  • Realise how the Trust engages with patients and the public and the role of PPI

Module Five – Introduction to Medical Ethics and Law

  • Understand and apply the ethical and legal framework that relates to medical practice

  • Understand the role of Clinical Ethics Committee

  • Clarify consent issues – capacity, advance directives etc

  • Understand the role of the Coroner

  • Understand how to structure a medical report and how to give effective oral evidence in Court

Module Six – Becoming a Teacher

  • How to facilitate the learning of others in your team within a busy clinical schedule and how to support a trainee with difficulties

  • Understand the roles of a clinical & educational supervisor

  • How to apply assessments and give constructive educational feedback to a trainee

  • Understand how postgraduate medical education is organised within Trusts and the role of the Postgraduate Schools, Deanery etc

Module Seven – Leadership and Management

  • Understand and apply the Belbin model to team working

  • Describe what is meant by management and leadership within the NHS and appreciate the different leadership styles

  • Appreciate the importance of coaching skills to improve team work and individual performance

Module Eight – Understanding the Health and Social Care Economy

  • Understand the structure of the Health and Social Care environment

  • Appreciate the importance of working across organisational boundaries

  • Appreciate the need for work force redesign and supporting new models of care and the development of multi-professional roles

  • Understand where the money is and how to write a business case

Module Nine – Managing Change & Transitions

  • Understand the change process

  • Become familiar with a range of change management techniques

  • Consider the dilemmas of the clinical leader

Module Ten – Action Learning Sets

  • Groups of 6

  • Multiprofessional

  • Meet 3-4 times over course of one year

  • With facilitator
