Counselling
Why has this counselling service been developed?
The Severn Deanery provides a freely available independent short
term counselling service for training grade doctors in the South West.
This development is designed to offer independent support in addition
to that provided by the NHS Trusts and Clinical Tutors.
Who will provide this?
One to One is an independent, confidential and personal counselling
service based in the South West, established in 1991. It provides an
independent short-term service, under contract, with a number of
employers and is well respected and valued.

What is counselling?
The aim of counselling is to help each person to clarify and
address their difficulties and identify ways forward. Often putting
things into words can help to begin to see the range of options and to
take control of life again.
Is anyone’s permission required?
No – the only permission needed is that of the individual who
accesses the service. Nobody else will know unless the individual
concerned chooses to tell someone.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is of vital and fundamental importance to One to
One. This will be discussed fully at the first session.
What will it cost?
Nothing – the service is free to all training grade doctors in NHS
Trusts in the South West.
How does it work?
Ring the telephone number in complete confidence to arrange an
appointment for an initial session. Counsellors are available within
25 miles of each NHS Trust. You will be expected to travel to see the
counsellor. The aim is to offer to meet within a week of the first
contact and never more than three weeks (to allow for holidays,
sickness, etc.)
Who are the counsellors?
All the counsellors are BACP (British Association fro Counselling
and Psychotherapy) accredited or are UKCP (United Kingdom Council for
Psychotherapy) registered.
