Welcome to the Severn Deanery Career Development Service
What is the Career Development Service (CDS)?
The CDS is part of the NHS South West Career Planning Service and
aims to support doctors in training to manage their careers
effectively. The Severn Deanery CDS has a dedicated, professionally
qualified Careers Guidance Practitioner working with clinicians across
the Severn area and other professionals in Deaneries in England.
How is this achieved?
Services offered by the CDS in conjunction with Bristol Medical
School, Severn Deanery Foundation School and Trusts in the Severn area
include the following:
Generally these services are delivered where you are working.
“I know I’m going to be a doctor; why should I need to use the
CDS?”
Medicine is constantly changing and developing and the same is true
of medical education. Early planning is therefore essential if you are
to take control of your career and get to where you want to be.
Questions you may need to ask yourself include:
- How many specialties are there?
- What are the growth areas?
- What personal skills and qualities
do I need for my chosen area?
- What will I do if I can’t get a
place in my chosen area?
- How confident do I feel about going
for interviews?
- Do I know how to make my portfolio
stand out?
- Is my C.V. up to date?
Of course, sometimes even the best-laid plans don’t work out and
dealing with change which has been forced upon you can be very
stressful. If you have taken the time to develop your career
management skills you may find this eases some of the pressure.
However if you are still unconvinced about why you should take control
in order to manage your career, you may want to click on the links

“Tell me more about the services available”
Whether this is to discuss issues around specialty choice,
preparing for interviews, or a complete career change, the process
of careers guidance aims to enable you to reach well informed and
realistic decisions about your career. It is an opportunity to focus
on your needs and concerns and to discuss these with an impartial,
qualified and experienced careers guidance practitioner. Careers
guidance is not about telling you what to do with your life or
providing you with an instant solution- it may be a process that
requires more than one session and you should be prepared to carry
out some research between careers guidance sessions.
To arrange an appointment, email:

Appointments can be at your place of work, or at the Severn Deanery.
These workshops are usually arranged in conjunction with
Foundation Programme Directors and are delivered at your place of
work. If there are specific career-related topics which you would
like covered in a workshop, speak to your Foundation Programme
Director or email
heather.samuel@southwest.nhs.uk. Research is currently underway
into a standardised career management programme specifically
designed for doctors, so please watch this space!
The Professional and Generic Skills programme, which includes a
workshop on career management, can be accessed via the Managed
Learning Environment website:
